Sports at Chengelo
Chengelo offers a wide variety of exciting sports at Inter-House and Inter-School levels:
Athletics runs from January through to April, during the first term of every year. It includes both girls and boys from U13 up to U18 age groups. Chengelo athletes compete in events ranging from Interhouse to Interschools to Interprovincial, and some even go as far to compete at a national level.
Basketball is a very popular and high profile sport amongst all the students here at Chengelo. This sport is played by both girls and boys from U13 up to U18 age groups. It is played in the second and third term from June through to November. Chengelo basketball teams compete in a variety of events both internally and externally.
Cricket is offered at Chengelo in the third term from August through to November. At present this sport is offered to boys from U13 up to U18 who participate in the ISAZ (Independent Schools Association of Zambia) competitions. Chengelo plans to introduce women’s cricket in the near future.
Soccer is a high profile sport offered at Chengelo all year long. It is played with lots of passion and enthusiasm amongst girls and boys of all ages. The Chengelo soccer teams compete in ISAZ (Independent Schools Association of Zambia) competitions, provincials, nationals and of course, the Schools Interhouse events.
Hockey is played at Cheneglo in the first and second term, from January through to July. This sport involves both girls and boys of all age groups. It is a high profile sport and is very popular amongst the students, demonstrating great passion and enjoyment of the game. Chengelo hockey teams compete in ISAZ (Independent Schools Association of Zambia) competitions, provincials, nationals and of course, the schools Interhouse events.
Netball is a dominant sport amongst the girls at Chengelo. This sport is played during the third term, from August through to November. Our netball teams compete in ISAZ (Independent Schools Association of Zambia) competitions, provincial and national competitions, as well as the school’s Interhouse events.
Tennis is offered at Chengelo all year round for girls and boys of all ages. This is currently a low profile sport but is gaining fast momentum/development and interest from students. Tennis fixtures have been scheduled for the start of 2018 with internal and external games emerging.
Swimming is offered at Chengelo for girls and boys of all ages. The swimming season runs during the third term from August through to November. Our team swimmers train for the annual Interhouse and Interschools Gala whilst some of our elite swimmers go on to compete at provincial and national level.
Volleyball is offered at Chengelo to girls and boys from U13 through to U18. This sport is played during the third term, from August to November. The students love this game and as a result it is a popular and competitive sport. Chengelo volleyball teams compete at a variety of events, both internally and externally.
Rugby is offered here at Chengelo to all boys from U13 up to U18. This sport is played in the first term from January through to April. The Chengelo rugby teams compete across a range of events both internally and externally. This includes the First Quantum Mining 7s and 10s tournament as well as the First Quantum Mining 15s tournament. Chengelo also has exciting plans to introduce new events and this year we hold our first Interhouse Tag Rugby Competition in January 2018.
Archery (NASP) National Archery in the Schools Programme is a new and exciting club introduced to Chengelo School this year. It is offered to both Primary and Secondary students from 10 years through to 18 years. The club will run throughout the year and an internal archery competition is scheduled for each term. In time, the club will grow and begin to participate in external fixtures within Zambia.
